Fat-Soluble Vitamins: A, D, E and K Explained
What Are Fat-Soluble Vitamins?
Fat-soluble vitamins — vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K — dissolve in dietary fat and are stored in the liver and adipose tissue. Unlike water-soluble vitamins (B-complex, vitamin C), they are not excreted rapidly in urine, which means both deficiency and excess can develop over time.
Individual Vitamin Profiles
Vitamin A (Retinol, Beta-Carotene)
- Key functions: Vision (rhodopsin formation), immune cell differentiation, epithelial integrity, reproduction, cellular communication.
- Dietary sources: Preformed retinol — liver, eggs, dairy, oily fish. Provitamin A carotenoids — carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, dark leafy greens (sukuma wiki, spinach), mangoes, papaya.
- Deficiency signs: Night blindness, xerophthalmia, impaired immunity, growth retardation in children.
- Upper limit (adults): 3,000 Β΅g RAE/day (preformed retinol). Excess preformed vitamin A is teratogenic and hepatotoxic. Beta-carotene from food is not toxic.
Vitamin D (Calciferol)
- Key functions: Calcium and phosphate homeostasis, bone mineralisation, immune modulation, muscle function.
- Sources: Cutaneous synthesis from UVB sunlight (10–30 minutes midday exposure on arms/legs several times weekly), oily fish (sardines, mackerel), egg yolks, fortified foods (some milks, cereals).
- Deficiency signs: Rickets (children), osteomalacia (adults), muscle weakness, increased infection susceptibility.
- Upper limit (adults): 4,000 IU (100 Β΅g)/day. Chronic excess causes hypercalcaemia, vascular calcification, kidney stones.
Vitamin E (Tocopherols, Tocotrienols)
- Key functions: Lipid-soluble antioxidant protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage, immune enhancement, cell signalling.
- Sources: Nuts (almonds, peanuts), seeds (sunflower), vegetable oils (sunflower, safflower, wheat germ), avocado, leafy greens.
- Deficiency signs: Rare; seen in fat-malabsorption syndromes (cystic fibrosis, cholestasis) — peripheral neuropathy, haemolytic anaemia, ataxia.
- Upper limit (adults): 1,000 mg (1,500 IU)/day (alpha-tocopherol). High-dose supplements may increase bleeding risk and, in some meta-analyses, all-cause mortality.
Vitamin K (Phylloquinone K1, Menaquinones K2)
- Key functions: Gamma-carboxylation of clotting factors (II, VII, IX, X), osteocalcin activation (bone), matrix Gla protein activation (vascular calcification inhibition).
- Sources: K1 — dark leafy greens (kale, spinach, collards, sukuma wiki), broccoli, Brussels sprouts. K2 — fermented foods (natto, some cheeses), egg yolks, meat, gut bacterial synthesis.
- Deficiency signs: Prolonged clotting time, easy bruising, bleeding; in infants, vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB).
- Upper limit: No established UL for natural K1/K2. Synthetic menadione (K3) is toxic and not used in supplements.
Absorption, Transport & Storage
Fat-soluble vitamins require dietary fat (approximately 5–10 g per meal), bile acids, and pancreatic lipase for micellar solubilisation and intestinal uptake. They enter circulation via chylomicrons (vitamins A, E, K) or vitamin D–binding protein (vitamin D). Storage capacity varies: liver holds months of vitamin A and D; adipose tissue holds vitamin E; vitamin K stores are limited, requiring regular intake.
Conditions That Impair Absorption
- Chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis
- Coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis)
- Bariatric surgery (Roux-en-Y, biliopancreatic diversion)
- Cholestatic liver disease, bile duct obstruction
- Long-term use of bile-acid sequestrants, orlistat, mineral oil
In these settings, water-miscible (emulsified) or micellised formulations may improve bioavailability.
Dietary Context in Kenya
Typical Kenyan diets provide variable amounts of fat-soluble vitamins. Staple-based meals (ugali, rice, chapati) are low in these vitamins unless accompanied by diverse vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs, dairy, or fish. Vitamin A deficiency remains a public health concern in some regions; vitamin D insufficiency occurs despite abundant sunlight due to indoor lifestyles, clothing coverage, and skin pigmentation. Vitamin E intake may be low where vegetable oil consumption is minimal. Vitamin K intake depends heavily on dark-green vegetable consumption.
When Supplementation May Be Considered
- Diagnosed deficiency (serum retinol < 0.7 Β΅mol/L, 25(OH)D < 30 nmol/L, etc.)
- Malabsorption syndromes confirmed by a clinician
- Restricted diets (vegan without fortified foods, very low-fat diets)
- Pregnancy/lactation — per national guidelines (iron-folic acid supplements typically include vitamin A at safe doses; vitamin D 400–600 IU/day often recommended)
- Older adults with limited sun exposure and reduced skin synthesis
Always test before supplementing fat-soluble vitamins at therapeutic doses. Self-prescribing high-dose single nutrients risks toxicity and nutrient imbalances.
Choosing a Quality Supplement
- Form matters: Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) > D2 (ergocalciferol); natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) > synthetic (dl-alpha-tocopherol); vitamin K2 as MK-7 (longer half-life) or MK-4.
- Third-party testing: Look for certificates of analysis (CoA) for identity, potency, heavy metals, microbes.
- Carrier oil: Softgels with olive oil, MCT oil, or sunflower oil aid absorption.
- Dosage alignment: Multivitamins usually provide 100–200% NRV; single-nutrient products should not exceed UL without medical supervision.
- Regulatory compliance: In Kenya, products should be registered with the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) and bear a valid registration number.
Dynapharm Products That Contribute Fat-Soluble Vitamins
The following Dynapharm products supply one or more fat-soluble vitamins as part of their nutrient profile. They are not standalone high-dose vitamin A, D, E, or K therapies.
Ginali Capsules
A multivitamin-mineral formulation that includes vitamin A (as beta-carotene), vitamin D3, vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol), and vitamin K1, alongside B-complex, vitamin C, and minerals. Designed as a daily foundational supplement. Take with a meal containing fat for optimal absorption.
Bee Pollen Capsules
Bee pollen naturally contains small amounts of vitamin A (carotenoids), vitamin E, and vitamin K, along with B vitamins, amino acids, and flavonoids. It is a whole-food supplement, not a concentrated vitamin source.
Soya Bean Powder
Provides vitamin E (tocopherols) and vitamin K1 naturally present in soybeans, plus plant protein, isoflavones, and essential fatty acids. Useful as a dietary addition to smoothies or porridge.
Practical Daily Habits
- Include a source of healthy fat (nuts, seeds, avocado, oil, egg, oily fish) at each main meal.
- Eat dark-green vegetables daily for vitamin K1 and provitamin A carotenoids.
- Get sensible midday sun exposure (10–30 minutes, arms/legs) several times weekly; consider testing 25(OH)D annually.
- If using a multivitamin or single-nutrient supplement, take it with the largest fat-containing meal.
- Store supplements in a cool, dry place; keep out of reach of children.
Safety & Interactions
- Vitamin K antagonises warfarin — maintain consistent intake; consult your clinician before changing supplement dose.
- High-dose vitamin E may increase bleeding risk with anticoagulants/antiplatelets.
- Vitamin A supplements contraindicated in pregnancy above 3,000 Β΅g RAE/day (preformed retinol).
- Orlistat, cholestyramine, and mineral oil reduce absorption — separate dosing by β₯ 2 hours.
Summary
Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K are essential for vision, immunity, bone health, antioxidant defence, and coagulation. They require dietary fat for absorption and are stored in the body, making both deficiency and excess possible. A varied diet with adequate fat, colourful vegetables, sunlight exposure, and, when indicated, a quality tested supplement can maintain optimal status. Test, don't guess — and choose products with transparent labelling and regulatory compliance.
